Pressure and Match-up in Defence

The picture above illustrates the effectiveness of "Pressure" and "Match-up" against attacking plays.
Here are the pros and cons of these respective defending commands.

Passing/Shooting

  • Match-up

Triggers the blocking motion which leads to a successful interception

  • Pressure

Does not trigger the blocking motion which makes possession recovery difficult

Kick Feint

  • Match-up

Blocking motion is triggered and player gets left behind

  • Pressure

Blocking motion is not triggered so low risk of getting left behind

Feints

  • Match-up

Applies constant pressure but does not go for the ball proactively

  • Pressure

Risk of being misled and left behind by ball and body movement

Dribbling

  • Match-up

Stays alert against fine movements but does not go for the ball proactively

  • Pressure

    Attempts to recover possession proactively

Although results will vary depending on the players' abilities and the actual situation, being aware of the effectiveness of each play will surely give you an advantage in both offence and defence.
