Announcing a new multiplayer battle that lets you link 2 PSP's together, using Ad Hoc mode!
Link Battles are played as 2-on-2 tag matches, with one player on each side controlling either Snake or Teliko. The match ends when one team eliminates the other, or collects enough items and reaches the goal.

There are 3 ways to win:

  #1 - Defeat your opponent
Reduce your multiplayer opponent's remaining lives to zero.
(Each time a player is defeated, his or her remaining lives will decrease by one.)

#2 - Collect items, and head for the goal that appears
When you defeat an enemy soldier on the field, he drops a disk-shaped item called a Pythagoras.
Collect three of these disks and goals will appear in all four corners of the field. Only one of these is the real goal - run into it to win.

#3 - Have the most Pythagoras disks when time runs out
When time runs out, the team with the most Pythagoras disks wins.
(If both teams have the same number, the match ends in a tie.)

  Link Battle Tactic #1
Find the enemy before he finds you.
In Link Battle, you can only see those enemies who are in your team's line of sight. In other words, this is one big game of hide-and seek between your team and the enemy team.

The trick is to find the enemy, without being seen. When you can't see the enemy, all you've got to rely on is your wits and your instincts.

And don't forget that there are other enemy soldiers in the arena besides your opponent. If they see you and attack, your opponent will find out where you are. So be warned: if the enemy finds you, you're as good as dead. Keep that in mind.

  Link Battle Tactic #2
When you find the enemy, blind him.
If you've managed to spot an enemy without being seen yourself, that's your cue to attack. In a Link Battle, by attacking and damaging an enemy, you can blind him temporarily. When an enemy is blinded, almost none of his attacks will work. That means that getting the drop on your opponent is the key to success.

Here, too, enemy soldiers are an important factor. If an enemy soldier spots you and attacks, you'll be blinded in the same way, so stay alert.

  Link Battle Tactic #3
Don't underestimate the importance of the Pythagoras disk.
In Normal Mode, all you have to do is defeat the enemy. But in a Link Battle, it's not enough just to shoot blindly at your opponent.

And so enters the Pythagoras disk - an item that adds a whole new level of strategy to Link Battles.

For example, here's one strategy that you can use in a Link Battle. If you defeat Snake and then defeat Teliko, the team will use up one of its remaining play credits, and both characters will come back to life. However, if you defeat Snake and then blind Teliko, your opponent won't be able to tag out, leaving them practically helpless. Now just collect three Pythagoras disks, and find the goal.

On the other hand, if your strategy is to fight your opponent, collecting just one Pythagoras disk will leave your opponent with no choice but to fight back. It might not seem like the Pythagoras disk has much of a direct impact on the match, but depending on the strategy you choose, it can become a crucial factor. Keep that in mind as you plan your attack.

  Link Battle Tactic #4
Remember there are some cards that can't be used in a Link Battle.
Link Battle has special rules that forbid the use of certain cards.

Med. Recover (cost -8) Big Recover (cost -12)
Jonathan (cost -20) Phase Down
...etc.

This is to ensure that the game is balanced and fair and it becomes impossible for you to finish the match without even giving your opponent a chance to move.

In other words, victory depends on who is better able to control their cards and costs.

  1. Use the wall press to your advantage.
The wall press is one of the signature moves of the Metal Gear series.
When you use it, your field of vision expands across the wall that you're pressed against.
That means you can stay hidden, yet still keep an eye on what lies beyond.
In a Link Battle, where scouting out the enemy is crucial, it's no exaggeration to say that this technique can mean the difference between victory and defeat.

  2. Use vision effect cards to your advantage.
We've said it once, and we'll say it again: scouting out the enemy is a crucial factor in a Link Battle.
Why? Because not only is finding the enemy important, but you can't attack them unless they're in your line of sight.
For that reason, one of the best strategies is to use cards that increase your visual range, such as "Marionette Owl (Night Vision)" and "Major Zero (Active Sonar)."

  3. Having an RC Missile is like having an extra player.
RC Missiles and Nikita Missiles are furnished with their own visual range.
If you're crafty enough, you can use them to scout out the enemy, and stay hidden the whole time.

  4. Be careful around doors and ladders.
As you move through a stage, you'll most likely have to climb ladders and pass through doors.
If there's a mine, or some other trap waiting on the other side, though, you can get seriously hurt without even a warning.
On the other hand, if you're the one who's laying the traps, it can make your opponent's job a lot more difficult.

  5. If you can't see the enemy himself, look for other signs.
Even if the enemy isn't in your line of sight, there are signs you can look for that will give away his presence - weapon and item effects like muzzle flashes and flying grenades, or status ailments like bleeding and more.
Just because it's the enemy's turn to move, doesn't mean you can just sit back and relax.

There are 4 different fields available in Link Battle mode, each with its own unique characteristics.
The field to be used is chosen at random each time you play, so there's no use in trying to plan ahead, and building a deck geared toward a specific field.
You'll just have to find the ultimate combination that will always give you the upper hand, no matter what the situation!
