Interview Segment 3
Orbital Frame "Anubis"

In the previous game, "Anubis" appeared only a bit at the very end. But this time it has become the name of the game (of the Japanese version). I would like to ask you things about "Anubis".

Shinkawa : As I said last time, it is basically the sketch I did in my school days.

Was Anubis the strongest enemy back then?

Shinkawa : Yes, the strongest.

If we look at your old sketched, Anubis hasn't really changed much.

Shinkawa : It did not have wings, but it always had its spear.

Do the wings work as weapons as well?

Shinkawa : They are thrusters. I thought Anubis' back needed something.
I didn't really put too much thought into how to attach them, but I started my thinking when creating the model.
They would be in the way if they are attached to Anubis at the waist. So we removed them and connected them to the body not physically but with energy lines. This kind of rule-bending is easy with ZOE but not with Metal Gear. The wings not physically connected to the body would not make sense in Metal Gear.

Yoji Shinkawa school day sketches
The roots of "Anubis".

Anubis now.
The thrusters give Anubis dignity.

The back of Anubis.
You can see the lacking flesh
and thruster connection point.
I guess Anubis was evil since your school days. It now has a really intimidating face.

Shinkawa : The face was not intended to look like this. In my school days, it was a simple dog face. The face on the bottom (energy line face) was actually a bug of the texture screwed up when I viewed an early model of Jehuty. That screwed up texture face is what you see on the bottom. We were like, "Hey, this bug...looks cool!" (laughs)

Does the god Anubis hold a spear?

Shinkawa : I don't know. (laughs) Anubis is totally different from the previous game. Since we change our style of expression, we ended up re-creating Jehuty from scratch.

Did anything change because you changed your style of expression?

Shinkawa : I wanted its armor to peel off little by little, but it didn't do much. Little by little turned out not obvious enough.

Watching the movie, I realized that Anubis has 2 fingers on each hand.

Shinkawa : Yes, 2 fingers. I saw on the cover of a CD of a heavy metal band with the thumb and pinky raised and all other fingers clinched. I thought the silhouette of that looked cool.

You can see some of the bone on the back of Anubis.

Shinkawa : I wanted to give it a mummy look. The back, lacking flesh, looks cool but you can see it well because of the wings. You can see it better on ***** ...

The joints of the leg bend the other way...

Shinkawa : The motion people said it is very tough to assign motion to such legs. Making bird feet stand firmly is not easy, they say, but they are working hard to make it happen.

You don't see too many robots with such joints.

Shinkawa : If Jehuty -- which is a bird -- had such joints, it would make sense. I guess these are more like the front legs of a dog.

Anubis is a dog and Jehuty is a bird...
Do dogs and birds have a special influence on you?

Shinkawa : I prefer cats to dogs.
A cat robot. (laughs)

Will we be seeing a cat robot in this game?

VìFI did not have a cat in my mind when designing my robots. If I were to pick one, it would be the new Neith.

A new Neith...Do you mean ***** !!??

Will everything be settled with Jehuty this time?
