We’re regularly blown away by the Konami community’s hugely impressive cosplaying skills. With a vast array of Konami characters to choose from, some are inevitably more of a challenge to recreate than others. The amazing costuming duo “Pro Voltage Cosplay” – who previously made this amazing Metal Gear REX cosplay – have surely chosen two more of the most challenging prospects: Jehuty and Anubis from Zone of the Enders. And boy, have they nailed ’em!

Ruby Taki (Anubis) and Shiori Tung (Jehuty) showed off their costumes at New York Comic Con 2015, and they definitely made a few jaws drop! You can check out the amazing pictures, taken by the talented Mineralblu Photography, at the bottom of this article. But first, we poised a few questions to the guys on their love of Zone of the Enders, and how they went about creating such an epic cosplay.

Zone of the Answers

1) The cosplays are epic! How long did it take to make them?

-Shiori & Ruby-
It took about 8 months on/off because of day jobs; we only used spare time/ off days to make the costumes.

2) They look incredibly complex. Could you outline the steps involved in making them?

-Shiori-
For Jehuty:

1. First I made the head.
2. I used the head size as a guide for the rest of the body.
3. I made the font and back torso
4. Then worked my way down to lower parts of the torso.
5. I worked on all the accessories like the wings, side thruster, arm shield and the cockpit etc…
6. Made the thighs.
7. Measured the stilts and then made the lower leg parts.
8. Made sure everything can be attached and detached.
9. Installed LEDs.
10. Test fitting

-Ruby-
I started building a mold of the upper body of Anubis, then took silicon mold to cast resin. I used resin or the liquid foam casting technique to make most body parts of Anubis. Some resin parts are reinforced with carbon fiber to give strength without adding weight. I used liquid flex foam to make the legs, to give more flexibility and mobility.

3) What were the biggest challenges in making the costumes? Was one more difficult than the other?

We worked separately in making Jehuty and Anubis; we each had different challenges to face.

-Shiori-
For Jehuty, the most challenging part was trying to figure out how to make everything wearable and still keep the proportion right. For example: Jehuty has extremely unconventional proportions like his protruding chest, gravity-defying thruster wings, and his lower leg is actually a much longer length in proportion to his thigh, in addition to the biggest challenge – those pointy tiny feet.

-Ruby-
People love big costumes with action! I learnt that from my previous costume Metal Gear REX. My biggest concern was to make it possible to move freely on the stilts with the heavy costume on. Another concern was the thruster. The 6 giant thrusters are sort of symbolic to Anubis’s image, but wearing huge wings at a convention is obviously a reckless idea so I had to come up with an alternative. Instead of having thrusters, I added more detail design for the back (based on Anubis by 3D graphic artist Ioannis Karathomas), although I’m still working on those thrusters for future photoshoots.

4) How did you come to the decision to make Anubis and Jehuty? Are you guys big ZoE fans?

-Shiori & Ruby-
As a matter of fact, we were already big fans of Konami’s most popular game series Metal Gear Solid, for which we have already done some cosplay of the year before in 2014 as MGS4 Raiden (by Shiori) and Metal Gear Rex (by Ruby). It’s because we just love Konami’s games so much that we decided to cosplay another legendary game from the franchises with Zone of the Enders! Another big reason why we chose Zone of the Enders was the beautiful and intricate mecha designs which really attracted us and excites us into make them into cosplay.

5) You recently took your ZoE cosplays to NYCC – what was the general reaction?

-Shiori & Ruby-
We are happy to say that the general reaction from the public was a positive and exciting one. People who knew about the game were really amazed to see that it was us inside these machines, and even people who didn’t know about the game seemed very excited and eager to know what and where our characters were from.

6) Any interesting stories from NYCC?

-Shiori & Ruby-
Our Anubis (by Ruby) participated in the NYCC Eastern Championship of Cosplay and won 2nd in the video games category! And Jehuty + Anubis pictures from NYCC are getting a lot of feedback from fans on SNS!

At this time we have not yet decided upon what we are going to do next, but we are always interested to see what new and exciting upcoming games are in store for us from Konami!
