When we first saw freelance artist Whittingtonrhett’s brilliant Castlevania artwork on DeviantArt, we were blown away by the immense amount of time (not to mention skill) that had clearly gone into making them.

The Castlevania series has adopted a diverse range of different art styles over the course of its 27+ year lifespan, and Whittingtonrhett brings his own distinctive style to the games’ Gothic world. We decided to fire a few questions over to Rhett about his art, and to find out his thoughts on the Castlevania series. Have a read of his answers below.

Are you a big Castlevania fan?

Yes I am a big Castlevania Fan. I have all the Games. (Except Haunted Castle) and also lots of the Castlevania merchandise such as artwork and posters and action figures. it has been my favorite game series ever since I was a kid in gradeschool. (that is almost going on 24 years now…)

What are your favourite games in the series?

My Favorite Games in the Series are Symphony of the Night, Castlevania 2 Simon’s Quest (it was my first Castlevania game that I played). and I also really like the N64 Castlevania games and also Castlevania Bloodlines for Sega Genesis.

How long have you been a freelance artist? Did you study art at school/college etc?

I have been a freelance artist for close to about 10 years. I work a day job, but do a lot of graphic design work for various people and businesses and events on the side. I went to College at our local community college and studied Graphic Design and almost finished the Degree but have not completed it yet. I seem to get a fair amount of work based on my skill and people that I know. so I am not concerned with finishing the degree at the moment.

Do you have any advise for aspiring professional artists?

My best advice for professional artists is to be very outspoken with your artwork and hobby! draw everywhere, make it known to EVERYONE! I get asked all the time about drawing tattoos or painting murals or doing sketches of this and that for people, and 90% of that is due to me carrying around a sketchbook to work and just in general, and people being interested and striking up conversations with me about my art. I do not have a degree, but get a fair amount of work. in fact I have worked with several people that have the degree I was/ am pursuing and they don’t get much graphic design freelance work, so I think it really comes down to your contacts and who all knows you and what you can do. so that is my best advice really. That and also to try and draw for fun. use it as an emotional outlet and just have fun with it. whether your are happy or sad, art is a reflection of the soul, and what your are feeling. one of the reasons I love Castlevania so much was because when I played Symphony of the night as a teenager, Alucard perfectly captured my adolescent emotional angst, and I identified with the character, and that made me pour emotion into my artwork and that enhanced it and made it much better than it would have been otherwise. it is still that way for me with Castlevania.
