Effect Veiler: More Important Than Ever

March 3rd, 2011

Instead of sweeping changes like when Heavy Storm became Forbidden, the March 1st Forbidden and Limited List brought us a lot of smaller changes with subtle impacts.  Duelists that capitalize on them are going to do really well in the coming weeks because  most of these trends are bigger than just a single Deck or strategy, and the rising importance of Effect Veiler is one of the biggest.

Since its release in Duelist Revolution six months ago, Effect Veiler has steadily seen more use.  Last format it was one of the few answers to Cold Wave, as well as a great counter to top cards like Debris Dragon and Gravekeeper’s DescendantCold Wave is now Forbidden from the Advanced Format, but other changes have made Veiler more important than it’s ever been before.  Duelists who find the room for a Veiler or two in their Main Deck are going to have a big advantage over other competitors.  Why?  Because of how it affects many of the biggest, most popular cards and strategies in the new Advanced Format.

Popular Strategies: Flamvell Cat

April 7th, 2010

Last year, Synchro Cat was one of the most powerful Decks around, winning the 2009 American, Canadian and European Championships.  The deck used Rescue Cat to bring out X-Saber Airbellums and other useful Beast-Type monsters like Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter and Neo-Spacian Dark Panther to handle anything you could throw at it. It also ended Duels very quickly with the now Forbidden Dark Strike Fighter. The Deck saw less play in the months that followed though, as key cards like Summoner Monk, Rescue Cat and Mind Control were all Limited and Dark Strike Fighter was Forbidden.  However, things have changed and Synchro Cat is back with a bang and lots of new tricks up its sleeve.

Thanks to these cards, it's easier than ever to Synchro Summon.

What’s New With Ritual Monsters?

March 18th, 2010

Absolute Powerforce has 1 new Ritual Monster and 3 new Djinns that can be used to Summon it. Each of these cards has a unique effect that gives you more options than ever when choosing to Summon a Ritual Monster.

The newest Ritual Monster is “Garlandolf, King of Destruction.” Garlandolf is a Level 7 Ritual Monster with 2500 ATK. When it’s Ritual Summoned, all face-up monsters with DEF less than or equal to the ATK of Garlandolf are destroyed, and Garlandolf gains 100 ATK for each of those monsters. Garlandolf is the perfect Ritual Monster to Summon when you want to clear the field, since most monsters have 2500 or less DEF.

Garlandolf can be Ritual Summoned with the Ritual Spell Card “Ritual of Destruction.” Then, you can remove “Ritual of Destruction” from your Graveyard so that all of your opponent’s monsters destroyed by your Ritual Monsters are sent to the top of your opponent’s Deck instead of his Graveyard. This can come in handy if you want to lock up your opponent’s draw with a card that won’t destroy your mighty Garlandolf. If you don’t remove “Ritual of Destruction” from your Graveyard, you can recover it with “Preparation of Rites” and get Garlandolf from your Deck along with it.
